Dracula by Bram Stoker // Review.

Since there's a huge craze over fantasy and vampire fiction at the moment (I'm the first to admit I'm a sucker for them), I thought it was only right to go back and pay my respects to the most famous vampire of all; Count Dracula. I originally bought my version of the book (a Penguin Classic which included an introduction, a preface, two appendices, further readings and notes. These were very useful as it had a sort of glossary at the back for foreign or old sayings) while I was visiting my hometown in Lincolnshire in Summer 2011. However, I didn't decide to start reading it until I went away to Yorkshire this Easter. Due to being absolutely hounded with school work and revision though, I failed to finish the book until last night. When I did finally get round to finishing it though, I came to the conclusion that I really enjoyed it. I thought it was brilliantly written (It even included sections of phonetically written speech with certain characters. Sometimes it was slightly annoying as I struggled to work out where the character was supposed to be from or how to read/pronounce it properly, but it did bring more character to it.) and of course 100 times better than anything Stephenie Meyer could write (I'm not hating, I am a fan of the first book of the saga). I'd definitely recommend this book to any other fellow supernatural novel enthusiasts. I also thought that the main characters were very likable characters; I felt most attached to Mina, Dr Seward and Van Helsing. The only complaints I have were sometimes it was dragged. Especially in the final chapters I felt that there was a really big build up to killing Dracula, but when it actually came about it was very straight forward. Saying that though, I have no suggestions to how it should have ended. Over all, I give this book about a 3.5/4 star rating out of 5!
